Salam, Urban Designers. Starting this maghrib until the maghrib time of the day after tomorrow, our Muslims Colleagues celebrate Eid Al Fitr, after 1-month fasting in Ramadhan month. Eid Al Fitr is celebrated on each year of Hijri (islamic lunar year) at 1 Syawwal. Syawwal is the month after Ramadhan. In countries using gregorian (the solar) calendar, the time of when 1 syawwal begins can be different to each other. But for sure, all parts of the earth celabrate eid one after another, according to the rotation of the month. The same case with praying times. The big picture is that all creatures do good deeds, pray, and worship, AllaH SWT, the one and only God, on and on and on, one after another, continuously until the decided time (Qiyamah), which only God knows when it will be. There is not even a piece of land on earth is empty of God's creature doing good deeds, praying, and worshipping. It keeps revolving until the decided time. Eid Al Fitr should be a feasting day. A day whern Muslims celebrate that they can eat and drink more than twice again, after flushing all the dirts from their body for 1 whole month, beside gaining sympathy and concern to those who struggle economically, especially in getting meals for them and their families. It goes heavily to the Government. The one, the Khalifah, the Imam, whom their people trust their money and belief. The one whom the people choose as their leader to bring them all to prosperity, not only for certain parties. If you are charged with tax, but, on the other hand, - you experience the surge of prices, - you experience challenges to provide good-quality waters, meals, clothes, and homes, for you and your families. - you find challenges in getting good-quality healthcare, education, and even jobs. - you still live in an environment that is not urbane yet, especially with bad-quality infrastructure. - you still pay toll for the road which is built from your taxes. We see that there are issues in the construction realm:
1. The lack of capacity building from Government, thus there is shortage of skilled workers and engineers,
2. The low material quality,
3. The expensive and inefficient bureaucracy and transportation,
4. The low reward for the construction workers and engineers (especially for local themselves compared to the reward given to foreign workers and engineers),
5. The complicated, expensive, and unjust certification (especially for local workers, engineers and companies themselves compared to foreign workers, engineers, and companies).
6. Unjust requirements in hiring, for local and foreign workers and engineers,
7. Unprofessional, or even no standard-operating procedure,
8. The bad planning, mitigation, and monitoring,
9. Taxes charged on many levels, and ofcourse,
10. The corruption, collusion, and nepotism.
They all lead to the low construction quality, and uncompetitive climate of construction in Indonesia.
No worry, We are here to cooperate with Governments, construction companies, and construction workers and engineers, in dealing with such issues. Our expertises, combined with working them out together, will create more competitive construction industry in Indonesia and any other countries. Salam, Urban Designers. We would like to thank & congratulate our valued partner in improving our urban life, the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (U.N. Habitat), for the invitation & commemoration on World Habitat Day (WHD), this 1st week of October 2023. Beside the ceremony taking place in Azerbaijan, Governments of countries who are members of U.N. Habitat, commemorate WHD in each of their own countries. We evaluate on what we must catch up. We acknowledge people, companies, & governments, who have improved urban life in their scope of works, either neighbourhood, district, city, national, or international. We see urban economy as one of the performances of a habitat, either a city/regency/village/human settlement. It is a spatial policy arrangement which is synchronized with other policies related to economy, mainly the policies of space/form and structure planning & design, circulation/transportation, labour/human resource, trade, the use of natural resources, & environmental conservation. We measure how successful our economy is with economic-related measurements, mainly GDP Per Capita & GDP Per Worked Hour. Special for urban economy, we add health, education, & employment of the citizens, as the measurements. Our challenge is to equalize the good policies in all habitats, so that they have equal development & prosperity, regardless of what kind of habitat they live (city or rural area). In short: to urbanize all people in all habitats. This will solve the moving of people from their hometowns to other certain cities. The cities attract us since they offer more opportunities to have more prosperous lives, which is understandable. We strive for the better life. If we can not be prosper in our hometowns, we move to other place which offer the better. Our Muslim Colleagues call it "Hijrah". We, in APUD, take our stand, that it is not our time anymore to say such words as: "By 2045, the world's urban population will increase by 1.5 times to 6 billion. We must quickly plan for growth and provide the basic services in the cities." Or "Cities are our only hope". Or "Cities play an increasingly important role in tackling climate change, because their exposure to climate & disaster risk increases as they grow". No. We say: "We must plan for growth & provide all our necessities in all habitats. All habitats are our hope. All habitats, including forests, plantations, mountains, deserts, oceans,Γ cities, regencies, villages, play an increasingly important role in tackling climate change". We trust & pay our Governments to manage our money & resources to make us prosper, safe, & secure. It is their job & responsibility to equalize the development of all places and to make us prosper. In the international level, we seek for the cooperation between Governments, that we can live prosper, safe, and secure, anywhere, either in Asia, Australia, America, Europe or Africa. Salam, Urban Designers. Ending this holy month of Ramadhan, We wish that all of our Muslim Colleagues around the globe succeed in achieving God's blessings, and embrace 1st day of Syawal month, as a Mubarok Eid, with happiness.
In this picture, you see heritage cuisines of Indonesia, often served on Eid day. The must-be-there staple food is Ketupat, or Kupat. It is a diamond-like rice cake made by 5-hours braising rice wrapped in young coconut leaves that are woven by hands. It is to be eaten together with other Indonesian dishes like Opor Ayam (the light-yellowish dish on the front left) or Rendang (the dark dish on the front right).
Kupat was introduced to Indonesians first time in Jawa Island, 15th century, by Sunan Kalijaga, or Jaka Sa'eed, his real name, one of the 9 Wali, who enlighted Indonesians with Islam. Kupat is the acronim of 2 Jawanese words: Ngaku Lepat, which means admitting the mistakes/sins we did. The 4 sides of Kupat symbolize and wish for everyone to apologize, to forgive, to live in abundance, and be clean from sins.
Ayam means chicken. Opor Ayam is chicken meat braised in coconut milk and Jawanese spices for 1.5 hours. Opor ayam is originated from Jawa Island. While Rendang, is beef meat braised in coconut milk and spices of Sumatera for 8 hours. Rendang originally comes from Sumatera Island. They are just 2 of many Indonesian dishes which often accompany the Kupat. E.g.: Semur Daging, Ayam Woku, Telur Balado, Iwak Haruan Santan, Sambal Goreng Ati, Kentang Balado, Sayur Labu Siam, Sambal Ale-ale, etc. You can google and imagine the taste. We are already drooling here π.
Each tribe has its own dishes. And Indonesia has 1,340 tribes π. No wonder that you can taste thousands of heritage cuisines here. You can also experience thousands of different languages, cultures, architectures, and the design of their settlements.
Now that the border is open, and we finished fasting, come to Indonesia! We will have feasts and experience the rich culture, cheers! π»
